Penne with tomato meat sauce

About the Recipe

Delicious and hearty carby meaty pasta for hungry days!


  1. 1 medium onion, chopped

  2. 3-4 minced or finely chopped garlic cloves

  3. 1 can diced tomatoes

  4. 1 ripe tomato, chopped

  5. 1 can mushrooms, drained, rinsed and sliced

  6. 1/4 green pepper, chopped (or replace with green peas or other veg of choice)

  7. 3-4 basil leaves, chopped

  8. 200-300g ground lean beef, or other preferred red meat of choice

  9. 2 tbsp tomato paste

  10. 1 tsp dry basil. 1/2 tsp cracked black pepper and any additional dry/fresh herbs or spices of choice

  11. 1 tsp salt (plus 1 tsp for boiling pasta)

  12. 2 tbsp corn or vegetable oil

  13. Pack of penne pasta


  1. Bring a big pot filled with salty water to boil and cook pasta according to packet instructions, around 10-12 mins. Drain when ready, reserving about 2 cups of the pasta water.

  2. Add 2 tbsp oil to a medium size saucepan.

  3. Sautee onion and garlic until soft.

  4. Add the dry herbs/spices followed by meat.

  5. Sautee meat until cooked through, followed by mushrooms and chopped tomato.

  6. Let cook on medium heat for a couple of mins before adding green pepper (or other veg of choice), can of diced tomatoes, 1-2 cups pasta water and fresh basil leaves. Turn heat to low and let simmer for about 10 -15 mins.

  7. Serve on top of pasta with grated parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves.
